2003 - 148 Players
The "Cribbers Classic" had a very modest and humble beginning. The very first
Classic was not even called a Classic, but was originally referred to as the "Thiessen Open".
The golf tournament was not really a tournament as such, but simply a golf afternoon for all
employees of Thiessen Enterprises. The object and purpose of this event was to provide
an opportunity for the guys in the trenches who never got invited to any corporate events to get
out for an afternoon of golf and spend a few hours in a more social setting other than to
work place or jobsite.
The Thiessen Open, first played in 1993 at the Lakeside Greens in Chestermere,
boasted a field of 12 players and was won by Veijo Mord, a smooth swinging lefty who played
better the more he drank. The "Veijo Mord formula" for golf success has been copied
many times over the years at the Cribber's Classic, usually with mixed results.
The Thiessen Open, over the next few years was played at the Highwood in High River,
back to Lakeside, out to Innisfail Golf Course and in 1997,
The Carstairs Community Golf Club hosted the "Cribber's Classic" for the first time.
This Club is well suited to novice golfers, yet provides a good test for the more
advanced player as well.
The Pro's and Staff at Carstairs have always treated us very well
The Thiessen Open with its 12 player field has gradually grown to a full field tournament with
136 players on 2002, with a very generous corporate sponsorship, great prizes and donations to
charity as a few additional features. The first corporate sponsorship was Inland Concrete in 1997
with Harold Boldt who shared the vision of putting on a golf tournament for the fellows working
in the field.
The following year Rick Destafano from Rolling Mix came on board and the list of sponsors
has grown each year. As the sponsor's list increased, so did the value and numbers of prizes. In 2002,
the Cribber's Classic boasted a Cam Clark Ford truck as a "hole-in-one" prize.
That same year, the Classic donated $1,050.00 to the Diabetes Foundation on behalf of our
"Gold Snap Tie Award" winner. Our most sincere appreciation is extended to those companies and
individuals who have helped to make the Cribber's Classic a great event for everyone involved.
Our Expressed Goal
The Organizing Committee is working hard to ensure that the Tournament format and atmosphere
caters to those humping the forms, driving the trucks or doing the work out in the field at the jobsites.
Their primary goal continues to be one that makes the Cribber's Classic a Tournament that is fun and
friendly for everyone, including those who are not sure whether they should play right or left-handed.
Even those that seldon play but for one afternoon a year can do their best "Happy Gilmore"
impersonations and have a good time doing it without having to feel embarrassed!
